Štech Adam

Adam Štech (*1980) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague under Jiří Sopko and Vladimír Skrepl. During his studies he spent a placement at Bellas Artes in Portugal. In 2011 he became a laureate of the Critics' Prize for Young Painting. In both his painting and his sculpture he takes his subjects above all from art history. He draws inspiration from the techniques and motifs of cubism, but also from the figure of Pablo Picasso himself, who recurs throughout his work. He is fascinated by depicting those who themselves depicted the world around them on canvas, by capturing the figures and faces of those who inspire him. What he enjoys about cubism is the play with optical illusion — the way our brain can read even a distorted image correctly and fill in the missing parts. He exhibits regularly in the Czech Republic and abroad. In 2024 he had a solo exhibition at the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art.
