Al-Mukhtarová Karíma

Karíma Al-Mukhtarová (*1989) studied under Jiří Kovanda at the Faculty of Art and Design in Ústí nad Labem, under Jiří David at UMPRUM in Prague and under Milena Dopitová at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. She has completed several placements and residencies abroad. She works with a wide range of materials, techniques and artistic media. Most often she works with embroidery, which she applies to surfaces as different and unconventional as glass — or her own hand. Her practice examines identity above all: she is interested in how culture makes us what we are. Her mother is Slovak and her father Iraqi, and she herself grew up in the Czech Republic; she is therefore interested in roots both biological and cultural, and in how they play out in a person's life. She exhibits regularly in the Czech Republic and abroad. In 2023 she had a solo exhibition at the Aleš South Bohemian Gallery in Hluboká nad Vltavou, and a year later at Pragovka Gallery.
